Welcome

August 2008pic

Dear Parents, Boys and Girls,

I hope you are enjoying the summer break and have had some opportunities for extra rest and perhaps a visit with distant family or friends!

We WELCOME all of our new families and WELCOME BACK all others!  We will have two new teachers with us this year:  Mrs. Kathleen Schafer will be teaching the 8th grade class and Mrs. Julie Sperri will be teaching the 6th grade.   Ms. Amber Colville will be a long term substitute in 1st grade until Mrs. Hipple returns.  Mrs. Hipple is now the mother of a beautiful baby boy! We welcome them and assure them of our famous “I.C.” support throughout the year!

We have been busy getting ready to reopen school in a few short weeks.  The classrooms are sparkling, thanks to Mr. Carmen and Mr. Tom who worked many hot days to get these done.  It won’t be long before the classrooms will be bright and cheery, and ready to welcome your children, thanks to our creative teachers.

Below you will find a copy of the updated 2008 – 2009 Calendar.  Most of the events for the coming year have been included on this; anything that is added during the year will be on the monthly calendar you will receive via the Communication Envelope.

You have probably noticed the logo at the top of this letter.  This is the theme for Catholic Schools Week this year and SERVICE will be our focus for the coming year.  All of us can serve in some way – by doing household chores, helping our relatives, friends and neighbors, or volunteering in our school or parish community.  Working for social justice is another way to serve.  This means trying to end social problems, like homelessness, poverty, bullying and pollution, and not just treating the symptoms.

The church teaches us very clearly that “loving our neighbor” means helping people when they are in trouble.  We have the Works of Mercy as actions that every Christian can take, many on a daily basis.  If you help someone get a drink of water or a snack after school, you are “feeding the hungry” and “giving drink to the thirsty.”

There is a bookmark attached for your family’s use.  You may want to cut it out and tape it onto the refrigerator as a daily reminder.  It lists the Corporal Works of Mercy.  I ask you to read these over together and take some quiet time to think about how your family can put these works of mercy into practice for your friends, family and those in need.  With this emphasis on SERVICE to others, will you, then, complete the “hands” that are also enclosed and return them to school either on or before the first day.   As we have done in the past, these will hang in our lobby as a testament that our Immaculate Conception families are committed, not only to Catholic Schools, but to serving one another, as Jesus did!  We will try to have various “service” projects throughout the year to help us carry out our goal of serving others.

Thank you for all your support.  Enjoy the remaining days of summer!  We’ll see you soon!
God bless you!

Prayer Before Travel

Hear us, Lord, as we ask you to accompany us.  May our journey help us to appreciate your creation and refresh us in
body and spirit.  May no harm come to us and may we reach our destination in peace and safety.  May we return safely
with the Lord, who is our constant companion and who is present to us everywhere and always.  Amen

A Summer Prayer

The wonderful days of summer that you give us,
Loving God, are here again.
Thank you for your constant surprises of changing seasons and this exciting time
of bright sunshine, vacations, different schedules
time to enjoy the outdoor world of sun,
water, friends and family things to do, outings, and adventures.
A world filled with so many inviting things…
all from you, loving God.
All calling us to grow, to have fun, and to get
to know you better.
Thank you, God.

Sister Janet Schaeffler, O.P.
